About Us
Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Mount Orab, Ohio, Flat Run Fossils is a window into the ancient past, offering a unique glimpse into the Upper Ordovician period. This remarkable site is renowned for its rich deposits in the Arnheim Formation, a geological treasure trove that has significantly contributed to our understanding of Earth's historical journey.
Discovering the Arnheim Formation
The Arnheim Formation, a pivotal component of the region's geological makeup, presents a fascinating array of sedimentary layers that date back millions of years. Its discovery and study have been instrumental in piecing together the complex history of our planet, particularly during the Upper Ordovician period, an era that saw significant developments in marine life and biodiversity.
Trilobites of Flat Run Fossils
Flat Run Fossils is renowned for its exceptional preservation of two iconic trilobite species: Flexicalymene retrorsa and Isotelus maximus. These ancient arthropods roamed the seafloor of the Upper Ordovician period, leaving behind remarkably detailed fossils that provide a glimpse into prehistoric marine life.
Flexicalymene retrorsa, known for its compact, rolled-up defensive posture, is often found perfectly preserved, showcasing its intricate exoskeleton. On the other hand, Isotelus maximus, the largest trilobite species ever discovered, offers a stunning look into the diversity and scale of ancient marine ecosystems.
Each fossil unearthed here tells a unique story of adaptation, survival, and the dynamic changes that shaped Earth's early oceans.
